Australia has quietly become one of the most active Reddit markets on the planet. Most brands still haven't worked out what to do with that.
DataReportal recorded a 179 per cent increase in Australian Reddit users between 2024 and 2025, a number that has been circulating in social media marketing circles without generating the strategic rethink it probably warrants. Reddit is now the fifth most visited website in Australia, and Australians spend more time per session on the platform than on Facebook or Instagram.
The genuinely engaged Australian audience is harder to put a precise number on. Reddit's ad platform extrapolates a potential reach of over 23 million, which is worth treating with some scepticism. The real, actively participating Australian audience is more realistically in the range of 5 to 10 million, concentrated in city-specific subreddits, niche interest communities and the broader national threads.
What's actually driving this is worth understanding. Australian internet users are going to Reddit specifically because it is not optimised content. The appeal is human-vetted information, real recommendations from people with nothing to sell, and communities where membership will immediately call out anything that smells like a brand trying too hard. The shift away from algorithmic feeds on Instagram and TikTok is real, and Reddit is one of the main places that traffic is ending up.
For brands, this creates a tension. Reddit communities are notoriously hostile to overt marketing, and the users who make them valuable are exactly the ones who will publicly dismantle a ham-fisted brand presence. Being absent from a platform where your potential customers are discussing your category is its own problem, though.
The opportunity is not necessarily advertising, although Reddit's ad product has improved significantly. It is understanding what Australians are actually saying about your industry in unfiltered spaces. That intelligence is worth more than most brands are currently extracting from it.
Reddit's growth in Australia is a signal, not a fad. The question is whether brands are reading it.
