Apple just quietly locked in its chip supply for the next five years, and the deal is worth more attention than the modest press release suggests.

Broadcom and Apple have extended their custom chip partnership through 2031, with Broadcom continuing to design and supply ASIC silicon across multiple future generations of Apple hardware. Neither company disclosed terms, which is standard for a relationship this size, but the scope tells its own story.

Broadcom has long handled the custom radio frequency chips that power cellular connectivity in iPhones, plus the silicon running Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other networking functions. This extension pushes the partnership further into Apple's AI ambitions specifically, with Broadcom technology reportedly built into Apple's in development AI server chips, internally codenamed Baltra, aimed at powering the cloud infrastructure behind Apple Intelligence.

Apple is no small client here either. It accounts for roughly 20 per cent of Broadcom's total annual revenue, which makes this less a routine supplier renewal and more two companies confirming they are betting on each other for the long haul. Broadcom shares rose 4 to 5 per cent in premarket trading once the news landed, which tells you how the market reads the certainty this buys both sides.

The real story is what this says about Apple's AI strategy specifically. While rivals lease compute or rely more heavily on off the shelf chips from the likes of Nvidia, Apple keeps building custom silicon relationships that stretch years into the future. Total control over your own hardware stack is an expensive habit, but it is also exactly the kind of move a company makes when it does not want anyone else setting the pace of its product roadmap.

Nobody outside the two boardrooms is getting excited about an ASIC supply agreement on its own merits. But if you care about how Apple Intelligence actually gets built and scaled over the next five years, this unglamorous chip deal is one of the more concrete signals available right now.
