Google's Pixel 11 event is tomorrow and Trevor Noah is hosting, which is a choice

Google's biggest phone launch of the year is tomorrow, and this time it's got a comedian running the show instead of a product manager reading off slides.

The Made by Google event kicks off 12 August in New York, live streamed from 6pm ET, with Trevor Noah confirmed as host. It's a deliberate shift in tone. Rather than the usual spec sheet delivery, Google's leaning into entertainment, packing the guest list with names like Stephen Curry, Alex Cooper, PinkPantheress, DJ Peggy Gou and cricket star Shubman Gill. This is less a tech keynote and more a launch event dressed up as a variety show.

On the actual hardware, expect the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL to headline, alongside the Pixel Watch 5. Google hasn't confirmed specs, but past years suggest camera upgrades, a faster Tensor chip and deeper Gemini AI integration baked into the phone itself are safe bets.

The bigger story here might be the format rather than the phones. Apple, Samsung and Google have spent years running near identical launch events: a slick video, a keynote, some cheering, repeat. Bringing in a host with actual comedic timing and a guest list built for social clips rather than tech journalists is a bet that these events need to work as content first and product briefings second. If it lands, expect other tech giants to start hiring their own hosts by next year.

Whether the phones themselves are worth the upgrade will only become clear once the specs actually drop. But if you want the launch itself to be watchable rather than something you skim in article form the next morning, this is shaping up to be the one to actually tune into.
