Marvel finally showed its hand on the X-Men reboot at D23 last weekend, and the internet immediately started recasting every role that was not announced yet.
The confirmed lineup is Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Inde Navarrette as Rogue and Maya Boyd as Storm. Then, just when the panel seemed done, Adam Driver popped up in a prerecorded video to confirm he is playing Nathaniel Essex, better known to comic readers as Mister Sinister. Jake Schreier, fresh off Thunderbolts, directs. The film hits cinemas exclusively on 5 May 2028, so we have a while to argue about it.
Reaction has been split roughly down the middle, which for a Marvel casting announcement is basically a miracle. Maya Boyd as Storm is getting genuine, no notes praise, with plenty of fans saying Marvel finally nailed an X-Men casting choice on the first try. Sink as Jean Grey is also landing well given how much scrutiny that role gets after two very different big screen attempts already.
The friction is coming from two places. First, some fans clocked that the seven names revealed skew four women to three men and started asking where the rest of the classic male lineup is. Kevin Feige addressed it on stage, confirming this is only the first wave of casting and more names are coming, which should calm that down once the next round lands. Second, a chunk of the fandom is struggling to picture Inde Navarrette as Rogue specifically, partly because she had been rumoured for Mystique for months and the swap caught people off guard.
None of this is unusual for an X-Men reboot. This franchise has been recast, rebooted and argued about since the Fox days, and Marvel clearly knew exactly what it was doing by dropping seven names instead of the full mutant roster in one go. Slow drip casting reveals are basically a content strategy at this point.
So who is your pick for the still empty roles. Wolverine and Magneto are the two everyone is desperate to see confirmed, and until Marvel says otherwise, the internet is going to keep casting them itself.
