Melbourne's Botanic Gardens just turned into a glowing forest and it's the best cold-weather excuse to leave the house

Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens just turned into 2.1 kilometres of glowing pathways, and it is exactly the excuse this winter needed.

Lightscape is back until 2 August, and the 2026 edition has brought in genuinely new work alongside the crowd favourites. The Australian premiere of Bifrost, a 20 arch tunnel of flowing light from French studio Pitaya, is the standout new addition. Dutch studio TOER's Firefly Field scatters 200 glowing points of light across the grass like something between fireflies and fairy lore.

The returning favourites are still doing the heavy lifting for a reason. The 30 metre Winter Cathedral remains one of the most photographed spots in Melbourne each winter, and the Fire Garden, a circular spiral of 150 candles, is the kind of thing that looks better in person than any photo manages to capture.

It runs Wednesday to Sunday most weeks, but goes daily during the winter school holidays through 12 July and again on Tuesday 28 July, so families juggling school holiday plans have more flexibility than the usual weekend only window. Adult tickets sit between $36 and $46 depending on the date, with concession and child pricing scaled down from there.

Enter via Observatory Gate on Birdwood Avenue, opposite the Shrine of Remembrance, and budget time for mulled wine and hot chocolate along the way, because standing outside in Melbourne winter without a hot drink in hand is not really an option.

Lightscape has picked up back to back Gold wins at the Victorian Tourism Awards, so this is not just a nice night out, it is genuinely one of the best run winter events in the country. Pair it with the Puffing Billy Train of Lights, running until 19 July, for a proper double header if you are planning a weekend around it.

Winter in Melbourne has a reputation for being something to survive rather than enjoy. Lightscape is the annual reminder that is not entirely true.
