Microsoft just put Elon Musk's Grok inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Microsoft just put Elon Musk's AI inside the apps a billion people use for work, and it is a bigger deal than the press release makes it sound.

Grok models from xAI are now rolling out in Copilot across Word, Excel and PowerPoint, through the Microsoft Frontier Program, a limited preview rather than a full public rollout. It sits alongside the OpenAI and Anthropic models Copilot already offers, part of Microsoft's broader push to make Copilot a multi model platform rather than betting on a single AI provider.

For now it is only available to eligible Frontier program customers, and it will not be offered during this preview in the EU, the European Free Trade Association or the UK, so most people will not actually see it inside their own Office apps yet.

The pairing is genuinely unexpected. Microsoft has poured billions into OpenAI and holds a deep partnership with Anthropic too, so adding Musk's Grok into the same lineup, whatever anyone thinks of Musk personally, signals that Microsoft cares more about giving customers model choice than about picking a side in the AI rivalry.

It also lands as xAI's own Grok 4.7 keeps slipping past its promised release dates, which makes the timing a little awkward for xAI even while landing inside Office counts as a genuine win.

Microsoft has framed the rollout as a way to collect feedback and understand how customers actually use Grok for everyday tasks like drafting documents, building spreadsheets and putting together presentations, before deciding whether to widen access further.

Multi model strategies are becoming the norm rather than the exception among the big platforms, and this is one more data point for it. Whether everyday users end up choosing Grok over the built in options once the wider rollout actually happens is the real test, not today's limited Frontier Program preview.
