Nvidia just gave away a free AI model that runs on one gaming GPU, no subscription required

The company that has spent three years selling everyone the shovels in the AI gold rush just handed out a free map, and it is a genuinely strange flex.

Nvidia released Nemotron 3.5 Lightning yesterday, its first open source AI model, and the headline detail is how little hardware it needs. It is a 30 billion parameter mixture of experts model with only 3 billion parameters active at once, which is the technical way of saying it can run on a single consumer gaming GPU rather than a data centre full of them. No subscription, no waitlist, no cloud bill. Download it, run it, modify it, all for free.

Nvidia is claiming up to four times faster output and 30 percent faster agentic task completion than comparable models, using distillation to squeeze capability from its bigger Nemotron models into something this compact. It launched alongside NeMo Switchyard, an open source routing tool that automatically sends each part of a task to whichever model handles it best and cheapest, rather than brute forcing everything through one expensive model.

The strange part is the strategy behind giving it away. Nvidia's entire business is built on selling the chips that run other people's AI, so a free, genuinely capable open model looks like it should cannibalise demand. CEO Jensen Huang's read is the opposite: more people building and running AI on Nvidia hardware, even for free, means more chip sales down the line. Whether that logic holds is a question for the analysts, but the model itself is already live on Hugging Face, ModelScope, OpenRouter and Nvidia's own site.

For anyone who has been priced out of the big subscription models or annoyed by usage caps, this is worth an actual look rather than a scroll past. It is not going to outmuscle the frontier models from the giants, but it does not need to. It needs to run on the graphics card you already own, and by most early accounts, it does exactly that.
