Toowoomba is about to drown in 40 million flowers, and somehow it's still the most slept on road trip out of Brisbane.

The Carnival of Flowers turns 77 this year, making it the longest running floral festival in the country, and the 2026 edition runs across four weekends from 18 September to 5 October. That's over two and a half weeks to actually make it happen, so "I meant to go" isn't really an excuse this time.

The Grand Central Floral Parade lands on Saturday 19 September, with more than 30 floral floats winding from Herries and Hume Streets down Margaret Street and into Queens Park. It's free, it runs about ninety minutes, and this year's theme is Spring Adventures, so expect entrants to go properly overboard on the concept.

Beyond the parade, garden displays open up across the city for the full run, which is really the point of the whole festival. Toowoomba spends the rest of the year being the place people drive past on the way to somewhere else, then for three weeks in spring it turns itself into one of the biggest flower shows in the country and mostly still doesn't get talked about outside Queensland.

Compare that to Brisbane's own spring events calendar, which gets wall to wall coverage every year for stuff that isn't nearly as visually mad as a city rearranging itself around 40 million flowers. Toowoomba's the quieter cousin that's actually doing the more interesting thing.

Under two hours from Brisbane by car makes it a genuinely doable day trip, or a proper weekend away if you want to see all four weekends' worth of displays rather than just the parade. Either way, book the drive in before 5 October, because a 77 year old festival isn't going to wait around for you to finally get organised.
