Where I'd send visiting family for coffee in Newcastle

Skip the cafes every listicle already told you about. If you are still marching visiting family down to the beach strip for a flat white with a view of a hundred other tourists, you are doing Newcastle a disservice.

The good stuff is a few streets back, in suburbs that do not need a postcard view to sell a coffee.

Start in Carrington at Fairmont Diner, on the corner of Cowper and Young Street. It only opened in mid 2024 but already feels like it has been there for decades, all warm orange booths and a menu that leans into a proper diner breakfast rather than another smashed avo.

Head to Mayfield for The Pocket, a Maitland Road institution that has been caffeinating locals since 2014. It pours Single O and does a toastie that has no business being this good for the price.

In Adamstown, Local Customs on Glebe Road is less a cafe and more a lounge room with excellent coffee attached. There is a record shop in the corner, a garden out the back and a woodfired panini worth the drive alone.

Bowie on Beaumont Street in Hamilton is the newest of the bunch, run by the couple behind The Junction favourite Talulah. It pours ONA coffee and has a laneway seating area that somehow feels private even when it is packed.

And if you really want to go where the tourists never think to look, Praise Joe Urban Pantry in Tighes Hill is the community hub locals quietly claim as their own, all loaded cookies, thick toasties and coffee that does not need an audience to be good.

None of these are hiding on purpose. They just never bothered marketing themselves to anyone outside the postcode, which is exactly why family visiting from out of town will actually believe you know this city.

Take them somewhere with a queue of regulars instead of a queue of tourists. That is the real Newcastle flex.
