Adelaide's Orange Spot Bakery becomes the first ever Great Aussie Pie Grand Champion, and it comes with a $21,000 prize

A bakery in Adelaide just walked away with more money for pastry than most of us make in a good month, and it did it by making an actual sausage roll and a pastie better than everyone else in the country.

Orange Spot Bakery in Glenelg, South Australia, has become the first ever Official Great Aussie Grand Champion, a brand new title introduced this year by the Official Great Aussie Pie and Sausage Roll Competition. The Grand Champion crown only exists for a bakery that wins two or more of the five major categories, and Orange Spot did exactly that, taking out Best Plain Sausage Roll and Best Meat Pastie in the same year. The prize was twenty one thousand dollars.

The competition itself is now in its 37th year, run out of Melbourne over three days at the end of August and into September, with hundreds of bakeries from every state sending pies, pasties and sausage rolls to be judged cold first, then reheated and judged again on shape, colour, filling and flavour.

Victoria still dominated most of the other titles, as it usually does. Buddy Bakery in Melton took out Best Plain Pie, Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes in Ocean Grove picked up Best Gourmet Pie with a roo rendang creation and somehow also won Best Potato Top Pie, Best Slow Cooked Barbecue Pie, Best Seafood Pie and Best Game Pie in the same event.

But this year the real story is Adelaide. A family run bakery in a beachside suburb just created a category that did not exist before this year, and won it on debut, ahead of bigger and better known names who have been entering for decades.
