Where I'd get married in Sydney if I wanted water everywhere I looked

If you want water in every direction on your wedding day, Sydney does not make you choose between harbour, beach or open water. You can have all three, just not all in the same booking.

Start at Athol Hall, tucked near Taronga Zoo on the harbour foreshore. It looks straight across the water and times ceremonies for golden hour, so the light does half the work before the photographer even shows up. The building has real history behind it too, which beats another marquee in a paddock.

A short drive round the headland gets you to Boathouse at The Spit, run by Zest Waterfront Venues. It sits right on the water in Mosman, and the whole pitch is exclusive waterfront dining with harbour views that do not let up from ceremony to last drinks.

For beach over harbour, Bathers' Pavilion at Balmoral Beach is the one to book. It is a proper Art Deco building right on the sand, holding anywhere from 30 up to 140 guests depending on how much of the pavilion you take over. Fewer skyscrapers in the background, more actual beach.

Manly has its own answer in Boathouse Shelly Beach, seating up to 60 for a sit down reception or 200 for a cocktail party. It is the kind of venue where guests genuinely want to arrive early and stay for a swim, which says a lot about the location doing the heavy lifting.

And if you want water underneath you rather than just around you, The Jackson is a genuine option. It is a luxury superyacht with three levels of event space, holding up to 400 guests on Sydney Harbour with uninterrupted views of the bridge and the opera house. Nobody fights for the good seats when every seat has a harbour view.

None of these need fairy lights or a feature wall to make a wedding look good. The water does that on its own, and Sydney has more of it to offer than almost any other city in the country.
