Anthropic backflipped on Claude Fable 5 pricing days after killing the free tier

Anthropic has spent the past week backpedalling on its own pricing decision, twice, and the saga says a lot about how unsettled the economics of frontier AI still are.

Claude Fable 5 was originally due to disappear from standard paid plans on 7 July, shifting to a prepaid usage credit system priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, roughly double what Anthropic charges for Claude Opus 4.8. Hours before that cutoff, and after a wave of user backlash, Anthropic extended free access through 12 July instead. Then, days before that second deadline hit, it extended again, this time through 19 July.

Two backflips in one week is not a great look for a company trying to project stability to paying customers. Pro, Max, Team and premium seat Enterprise subscribers can keep using Fable 5 without extra charges during the extension, capped at up to 50 per cent of their weekly usage limit before falling back to usage credits or a different model.

The timing has not helped Anthropic's case either. This whole saga has played out the same week OpenAI pushed GPT-5.6 into full general release across three pricing tiers, undercutting its own previous flagship model on cost. When your closest rival just made a top tier AI model noticeably cheaper, yanking access to your own flagship in the same fortnight is exactly the kind of self inflicted headline a company in the middle of a competitive arms race does not need.

Anthropic has said it hopes to eventually restore Fable 5 as a standard included benefit once capacity allows, though there is still no timeline attached to that promise, which is doing a lot of quiet work in that sentence.

What this really exposes is how shaky the "included in your subscription" promise around frontier models actually is right now. These companies are burning enormous amounts of compute running their best models, and the economics clearly are not settled. Expect more moves like this across the industry, not fewer, as providers work out what they can genuinely afford to give away for free.

If you are running a business on Claude, the practical takeaway is simple. Keep an eye on your usage and do not assume this current extension is permanent, because the last two deadlines both moved at the last minute.
