Bondi Beach currently has an ice rink and a Ferris wheel parked on the sand, and honestly, that sentence alone should be enough to get you there.

Bondi Festival runs until 19 July, and the headline attractions are doing exactly what beachside winter festivals should: making the least beach appropriate activities possible feel completely normal right next to the surf. The ice rink runs daily from 10am to 8.45pm, tickets between $15 and $28, and yes, skating with a view of the ocean is as strange and fun as it sounds.

The Bondi Vista Ferris wheel stands 25 metres tall, running daily from 10am to 9pm for $10 to $12 a ride, and offers a full 360 degree view that takes in the beach, the headlands and, depending on timing, a proper sunset.

Beyond the big two, the festival runs comedy and live music through Bondi Pavilion, plus weekend food markets set up in Bondi Park for anyone who wants to make a full day of it rather than just squeezing in a quick skate.

The scheduling works nicely for a bigger weekend plan too. NAIDOC Week events are still running across Sydney until 12 July, so anyone visiting the city over the next week or so can build an itinerary that covers both without much extra effort.

There is something genuinely funny about turning one of Australia's most iconic beaches into a winter wonderland for two and a half weeks, and the contrast is exactly why it works as content. A Ferris wheel next to actual waves is not something most cities can pull off, so lean into the novelty while it is still up.
