ChatGPT is about to start showing you ads, and Europe is going first

If you have been getting your late night existential spirals answered by ChatGPT for free, brace yourself, the ads are coming.

OpenAI Ireland emailed users on 15 August confirming that ChatGPT's Free and Go tiers across the EU, the wider EEA and Switzerland will start showing ads later this month. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts stay ad free, so if you are paying, nothing changes for you.

Europe is not first in line either. OpenAI already rolled ads out to Free and Go users in the US, the UK and a handful of other markets earlier this year. This is simply the next region on the list, and given how much regulatory scrutiny OpenAI already cops in Brussels, it was never going to be the easiest rollout.

Here is the part worth actually reading before you panic. Ads will not be personalised by default. Targeting starts with the topic of your current conversation plus a general sense of your location and device type, and it specifically excludes your chat history and any saved memories. If you want properly personalised ads, you have to opt in, it is not switched on for you automatically.

Advertisers do not get access to your actual conversations either. They only receive aggregated performance data, the kind of broad numbers that tell them an ad worked without handing over what you typed at 2am asking ChatGPT to diagnose your situationship.

It is still a genuine shift though. ChatGPT has spent years selling itself as the clean, ad free alternative to a search engine cluttered with sponsored links. Once ads show up inside the actual chat window, that pitch gets a lot harder to make, free tier or not.

The honest read is that OpenAI needs a proper advertising business to make its numbers work long term, subscriptions alone were never going to cover the cost of running models this size. Free users were always going to be the ones who paid for it eventually, just not in cash.

If the idea of ads sitting inside your chatbot bothers you, now is the time to check whether upgrading to a paid plan is worth it, or to keep an eye on exactly what OpenAI counts as "non-personalised" once this actually goes live.
