Newcastle just got a run of new openings, and Hayl Mary in Maryville is the one everyone's talking about

Hayl Mary is the name every Novocastrian keeps dropping into conversation right now, and for once the hype checks out.

Sitting at 74 The Lane in Maryville, right on Throsby Creek, it is the second venue from Phil and Hayley, the pair behind Praise Joe Urban Pantry in Tighes Hill. Expect chef driven brunch, house made pastries and specialty coffee, plus water views that make the drive out from the CBD worth it. It is open Wednesday to Sunday, 6am until 2pm.

Hayl Mary is not the only reason to update your list of Newcastle favourites though.

Frenchie has swapped Carrington for Darby Street, reopening at number 9 in one of Newcastle's busiest dining strips. Under group executive chef Rafael Tonon the menu keeps its familiar favourites and considered wine list, with dinner now running Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm and lunch on the way.

Over on Hunter Street, Surly's American Tavern has taken over the heritage listed ANZ Bank Chambers building at number 231. It is the Sydney favourite's first venue outside the harbour city, and it arrives with low and slow barbecue, a 180 inch screen for sport and enough craft beer to keep the East End busy on a Friday night.

For something calmer, Eddie's has opened inside the heritage Shepherds Hill Cottage at 41 The Terrace on The Hill. The $1.8 million restoration gives Noke Group's fourth venue arguably the best view of any cafe in Newcastle, with European inspired brunch and proper coffee to match.

And if you are after something quick and ridiculously good, Nom Noms on Beaumont Street in Hamilton has had queues out the door since day one. Get the banh mi and do not skip the homemade chilli sauce.

Venues open, close and change hands fast in this town, so treat this list as a snapshot rather than gospel. Get to Hayl Mary, Frenchie or Surly's before the secret is properly out and the wait times catch up with the hype.
