Newcastle's pizza scene is having a moment, and Instagram has the receipts

Newcastle used to be a "good coffee, meh pizza" town. Not anymore.

Walk down King Street on a Friday night and you'll queue for a table at Napoli Centrale before you even open the menu. This is the spot locals call the benchmark, proper wood-fired Neapolitan bases, a wine list that actually matches the food, and enough Instagram tags to make it feel like the whole city eats there on rotation.

Further out, Emilio's has been quietly doing this since before Instagram existed. Emilio and Barbara Falcon opened the original Darby Street restaurant in 1983, and more than four decades on the family is still running wood fired pizzas and fresh pasta out of Warners Bay and The Junction. It is the kind of place that built a following on repeat customers rather than reels, though the pizzas are getting a second life online anyway.

Over in Hamilton, In Forno has quietly built a mini empire, with a second site now open in Charlestown. The wood-fired pizzas and fresh pasta get the tags, but it's the vegan Detroit style slices that keep turning up in stories from people who don't usually bother posting their lunch.

A few doors down Beaumont Street, Danny's Pizza is doing something different again. Eighteen-inch New York-style slices out front, a speakeasy vinyl bar hidden out back. It reads more like a bit, but the pizza holds its own and the whole setup photographs beautifully, which is presumably the point.

Then there's Islington's newest addition. The Tipsy Italian opened in 2024 with a wood-fired oven front and centre, and the prosciutto and hot honey pizza has become the kind of thing people drive across town for. Family run, Italian owned, and clearly not messing about.

What ties all of these together isn't just good dough. It's that each one understood, probably without a marketing meeting in sight, that a good pizza photographs itself. Moody lighting, a stretchy cheese pull, a hand reaching for a slice. That's free advertising every single night of the week.

Newcastle's pizza scene didn't get good overnight. It just finally started showing its work.
