Snapchat has officially gone full Hogwarts, and Christmas has not even arrived yet.

The app has rolled out a run of Harry Potter themed AR lenses, chat wallpapers, Bitmoji fashion drops and even a wizarding world app icon, all timed to build hype for HBO Max's big budget reboot Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The series lands on HBO Max this Christmas, and Snapchat is not waiting until then to start the marketing.

Twelve AR lenses are rolling out through the season, letting users open a Hogwarts letter, ride the Hogwarts Express or get sorted by a virtual Sorting Hat. Bitmoji owners can dress their avatar in full house robes, and the new chat wallpapers give fans a themed backdrop for arguing about which house their friends actually belong in.

The rollout goes beyond the app too. Snap is running in person fan events across the US and UK, complete with Snap Mirrors that let people try on physical Hogwarts house gear and see it reflected back in augmented reality. It is the kind of stunt built purely for the group chat, and for anyone who has ever wanted proof they are a Ravenclaw without taking the quiz again.

The timing is not subtle. HBO's new series is one of the most expensive television bets in years, rebuilding the wizarding world from scratch for a generation that grew up on the films but never saw them on the big screen. Snapchat getting first dibs on the fandom, months out from launch, is a smart bit of platform matchmaking. Gen Z lives on Snapchat, Harry Potter still prints money, and a Sorting Hat lens costs a lot less than a Super Bowl ad.

Whether this convinces sceptics the reboot deserves a chance or just gives everyone something to argue about before December, it is working. Go find out which house your Bitmoji gets sorted into before your friends beat you to it.
