X just made it a lot harder for creators to get paid any way but its own way

Want to get paid for your posts on X? You now have exactly one way to do it, and Elon Musk owns it.
From 2 September, X says all US payouts from its Original Content Rewards program and creator subscriptions will run through X Money, its own in-house payments service. Stripe, which handled payouts before, is out for US creators. If you are already on X Money, nothing to do. If you are not, you will need to sign up to see a cent.
X is framing this as a win for creators. Under the old system, payments processed every two weeks and you needed to hit a $30 minimum before you could withdraw. X Money pays out the moment money is sent, no threshold, no waiting for the fortnightly run.
The catch is there is no opt out. Creators outside the US keep using Stripe, but in the US, X Money is now the only door in. That is a meaningful shift for a platform that spent years selling creators on the idea that X was where they could finally get paid properly for their work.
The timing lines up with other changes to how X pays people. Its Creator Revenue Sharing Program, which rewarded engagement more broadly, retires on 7 September and folds into Original Content Rewards, which leans harder on original posts over recycled content. Payouts will also count toward the direct deposit requirements X Money users need to hit for its better interest rate, currently 6 percent for Premium subscribers versus 4 percent standard. X Money itself is not a bank. Funds sit with Cross River Bank, which is FDIC insured, but the app is very much Musk's.
None of this is illegal or even unusual by tech platform standards, plenty of apps prefer to keep money moving through their own rails. But dressing up you will use our payment system and nothing else as a creator friendly upgrade is a stretch. If your income depends on X, you are now banking with X too, whether you like it or not.
Worth remembering next time a platform tells you a change is for creators. Read the fine print, and maybe keep a backup income stream that does not run through somebody else's app.
