Tim Curry has died at 80, and few actors ever committed to a role like he did

Tim Curry has died at 80, and it is genuinely hard to think of another actor who built a whole career on being the most memorable person in every room he walked into.

His longtime manager Marcia Hurwitz confirmed Curry died peacefully at his home in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles. Curry had lived with ongoing health issues since a severe stroke in 2012, though he kept working in voice roles well after it.

Born in Cheshire, England in 1946, Curry started out on the London stage before landing the role that would define him for a generation. As Dr Frank-N-Furter in the original 1973 stage production of The Rocky Horror Show, and the 1975 film that followed, Curry turned a corseted, fishnet clad mad scientist into one of the most iconic performances in cult cinema.

Decades on, it is still the reference point for camp done properly rather than camp played for cheap laughs.

He never let himself get boxed in by it either. Curry terrified an entire generation as Pennywise in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King's It, a performance so committed that plenty of millennials still will not look at a storm drain the same way. He turned up as the concierge chasing Kevin through New York in Home Alone 2, played Wadsworth the butler in the cult favourite Clue, and lent his voice to everything from Muppet Treasure Island to a long list of animated projects that introduced him to viewers who had never seen Rocky Horror at all.

Across a career that spanned stage, film and voice work, Curry picked up multiple Emmy, Grammy and Tony nominations and wins, a genuinely rare spread for one performer.

What connects all of it, Frank-N-Furter, Pennywise, Wadsworth, is that Curry never played anything halfway. He understood that a great villain, a great weirdo or a great scene stealer has to fully commit or the whole thing falls flat, and he never once looked like he was holding back.

That fearlessness is the legacy. Every actor who has gone big and strange on screen since owes Curry something, whether they know it or not.
