Where I'd take a first date for coffee in Sydney

Skip the cafes every listicle already told you about. A first date coffee does not need an Opera House backdrop or a queue of tourists to prove the city has good taste, it just needs somewhere you can actually hear each other.

Start in Darlinghurst with Parami, a tiny laneway spot on Alberta Street from the team behind Mecca Coffee. It serves onigiri and matcha rather than a big brunch menu, so nobody is stuck mid sentence with a mouthful of smashed avo.

In Redfern, Good Ways Deli on Cooper Street is a sunny corner shop that has been slinging good coffee and proper sandwiches since 2021. Grab the outdoor table if the weather plays along and let the neighbourhood do the ambience for you.

Morris in Paddington is tucked behind the old UNSW Art and Design campus, well off Oxford Street, with tables scattered under a big fig tree. It is slow enough that nobody feels rushed and busy enough that silence never gets awkward.

Out at Bondi, Blackwood on Glenayr Avenue is a different kind of first date, busier and buzzier than the others on this list, with breezy alfresco seating spilling toward the park across the road. Go early to dodge the Saturday live music crowd and split something off the all day menu, the easy hum does the job of filling any awkward silence for you.

And if you want something with a bit more personality, Ladies and Gentlemen Cafe Diner on Enmore Road in Marrickville mixes classic brunch with a few Taiwanese dishes, in a minimalist room dressed with the owner's own florals.

None of these need a booking, none of them come with a wait list and none of them will make your date feel like you googled "romantic Sydney cafes" five minutes before you left the house.

Pick whichever one is closest to your date's train line and let the coffee do the rest.
