YouTube is testing videos exclusively for your most obsessed fans

YouTube just built a velvet rope straight into the platform, and only your most obsessed fans get past it.
The company is testing a new distribution setting called Top Fans. It limits a video's audience to roughly the top one percent of a creator's viewers, ranked by watch time over the past 28 days.
If you are not in that top one percent, the video simply does not exist for you. Even a direct link will not open it, so the usual workaround of a mate forwarding you the URL is dead on arrival.
For now, YouTube is only trialling this with Official Artist Channels, meaning musicians rather than the wider creator pool. Rene Ritchie, YouTube's Head of Editorial, has confirmed the feature was flagged back in late 2025 and is not currently intended for most YouTubers.
The content itself ranges from quick thank you clips to behind the scenes tour footage and invitations to exclusive events. Unlocked fans get notified and may see a special callout in their Home feed, which is basically YouTube's version of a backstage pass.
The clever bit is that none of this costs the viewer a cent. Unlike channel memberships or a Patreon tier, Top Fans is not paywalled. Access is earned through attention, not payment, which makes loyalty itself the currency.
This is YouTube quietly training its biggest fans to watch longer and more often, because watch time now buys status as well as recommendations. Smart creators should be watching this test closely, because scarcity built on genuine engagement is a much stickier loyalty play than another paywall.
If you run a channel with any kind of superfan base, start tracking your top viewers now. When this rolls out beyond music, the creators already rewarding their true believers will be first through the door.
