Melbourne is getting a brand new market right in the middle of the CBD, and it launches this month

Melbourne is finally getting a market that doesn't require a tram, a train and a small pilgrimage to the suburbs. The Melbourne Makers' Market launches at City Square on Saturday 19 September, plonking a proper design market right in the middle of the CBD.

Up to 40 emerging artists and designers will set up along Swanston Walk, between Collins Street and Flinders Lane, right next to Town Hall and St Paul's Cathedral. It runs from 10am to 3pm and entry is free, so there's genuinely no excuse not to swing by on your lunch break.

The market is run by the team behind the Rose Street Artists' Market, so they know their way around a decent stall lineup. Expect textiles, ceramics, prints, jewellery, furniture and whatever else Melbourne's makers have been quietly perfecting in their studios. It's a curated, design-led setup too, which means no resellers and no franchise pop-ups pretending to be handmade. Just actual makers selling actual things they made.

That curatorial bent matters more than it sounds. The panel picks a fresh set of up to 40 stalls each month, so the market never looks the same twice. Chat to the person who made the ceramic bowl you're eyeing off. Watch someone finish a piece at their stall. Buy directly from the source instead of a middleman markup.

It's also a smart bit of city planning, frankly. Melbourne's market scene has always skewed suburban, Rose Street, Camberwell, the Vic Market, all requiring a bit of a trek. Sticking a market in one of the city's most storied civic spaces means city workers, tourists and anyone already in town for a coffee run can wander through without planning their whole day around it.

The 19 September date marks the launch, but this isn't a one-off. Organisers have promised more dates every month after that, so if you miss the debut, there's already another one on the way.
