Sydney is getting a whole festival dedicated to sake, and it's taking over the Overseas Passenger Terminal

Sydney's about to have a sake festival, and it's happening right on the harbour.

The Australian Sake Festival lands at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in The Rocks from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September, turning one of the best harbour view spots in the city into a weekend of Japanese drinking culture. Expect more than 80 stalls, upwards of 400 sake varieties to taste, and Australian distributors standing shoulder to shoulder with breweries who have flown in straight from Japan.

Sessions run Friday from 5pm to 9pm, then Saturday and Sunday split into an 11am to 3pm daytime slot and a 4pm to 8pm evening one, so there's no excuse about work hours getting in the way.

It's not just sake either. Japanese food stalls, ceramics, crafts and lifestyle goods round out the weekend, which means this reads less like a boozy pop up and more like a proper cultural festival that happens to be extremely well stocked with rice wine.

The Overseas Passenger Terminal doesn't get thrown open to the public nearly often enough, sitting right on Sydney Harbour with views most festivals would kill for. Sake aside, that alone is worth the trip.

Sydney has no shortage of festivals built around a single drink category these days, but sake still feels like genuinely fresh territory compared to the tenth gin festival or Oktoberfest knockoff doing the rounds. Combine that with a harbourside venue that rarely gets used for anything this casual, and the appeal is obvious.

Word to the wise. Niche festivals like this have a habit of selling out once word spreads, and with only three days and six sessions on offer, capacity is not exactly generous. Book ahead rather than turning up on spec and hoping for the best.

Mark 11 to 13 September in the diary, bring a friend who actually knows the difference between junmai and daiginjo, and let them do the ordering while you nod along looking informed.
